2016 Pinewood Derby Race

This year we decided to let Brecken sign up for Cub Scouts and so far he seems to be enjoying most of the events and the various things that they do.

This weekend was one of the bigger events… The Pinewood derby race.  However, derby racing these days are way more high-tech than what I remember as a child.  All we had was a wooden old track and each Cub scout had to put our cars on the track before every race.  Not this day in age, we had to drop off the car between 9 AM and noon on Saturday morning and then everyone showed up at 4 PM sharp for the actual race event.  During the event, none of the kids got to touch the cars as they were pretty much automatically run through the rest of the night.  The scout masters put the cars on the track and the computer calculated the times and based on overall race averages the best 4 raced in the finals.  We were there for 3 hrs, took a break for pizza and still completed 120 heats which meant every kids car raced 16 times.

He did well I thought as we had a very simple design and only cut the block for him.  Then I made him paint it, pick the weight placement and screw them in.

Here are a couple of pictures and a video at the end.

Brecken is crossing his finger, toes and legs. His car is the orange blur.

Brecken still was smiling after the race so that is a Win!

Brecken’s car was the Orange Monster but it looks as though the Scout Masters made a typo.

The video is a couple of his race clips together.  There is one of him practicing and then 4 actual races. In the clips, he got 3rd, 4th, 3rd and 2nd in those heats.
